Art
Art class at OPMS is traditionally a 6th, 7th, or 8th grade year-long enrichment class but separated by two semesters. Our curriculum follows the state standards. The first semester is two-dimensional (2D) art, which means a lot of drawing and painting, elements and principles of art, and critiques. Art in World Cultures is taught during the second semester, which includes studying various cultures and countries with a culminating art project related to the culture being studied.
We utilize a rotating art curriculum so that students who take the art elective receive extended rigorous content in subsequent years. Leesburg High requires incoming freshmen to apply for art class with a portfolio of work. Students will work on technique and skill development, as well as start to prepare a portfolio of work for high school and beyond if interested in attending art classes in high school. This elective class is not a prerequisite for the high school art classes, but would be incredibly helpful.
